Magicien et poète

Voilà un artiste qui a gardé ses rêves d'enfant et les transmet sur ses toiles avec un enthousiasme toujours renouvelé.
Qui ne connaît l'oeuvre de Menguy? Gaie, généreuse où le quotidien se transforme sans cesse en fête joyeuse. Volent les ballons multicolores des clowns aux habits scintillants! Le peintre réinvente le cirque dans un pétillement de lumière. En une composition savante sans 'qu'il y paraisse au premier regard, il associe droites du chapiteau et courbe de la piste, accroche des lampions lumineux qui font chanter rougesorangés et bleus, souvent posés en aplat dans une matière fine, transparente par endroit.

Tel un magicien, Menguy nous enchante dès lors qu'il s'empare d'un sujet: baladins, chevaux fougueux parés de grelots et de bulles translucides, pianos verts aux touches colorées lui ont permis des inventions très réussies révélatrices d'une imagination vagabonde. Chaque toile se découvre comme un petit poème où se conjuguent fantaisie et rigueur.

He reinvents the circus in a sparkle of light. With a skilful but seemingly discrete composition, he weds the uprights of the big top with the curves of the piste and suspends luminous lamps that give song to orange-reds and blues laid flat in fine, sometimes transparent pigment.

The elfin Menguy enthralls us as soon as he grasps a subject, and the magic is instantaneous : knights errant, fiery steeds bedecked with bells and baubles, green pianos with motley keys are some of the gripping inventions of headstrong fancy. Every canvas becomes a poem that merges fantasy with artistic rigor.
